Located in the parish of Avenidas Novas, between Avenida de Berna and Avenida Marquês de Tomar, the “Apartamento Avenida de Berna” project and construction work involves a corner building located in one of Lisbon's most emblematic architectural contexts, marked by palaces and eclectic buildings from the 19th and 20th centuries and by landmark works by architects such as Ventura Terra, Pardal Monteiro, Norte Júnior, and Cassiano Branco. The renovation, carried out by CVZ -Construções and commissioned by a Lisbon family, sought to adapt the apartment to contemporary living without losing the historical identity of the property and the area.
The intervention preserves the essential characteristics of Avenidas Novas, enhancing original elements such as woodwork, doors, and baseboards, to which new contemporary touches are added, such as indirect lighting and fixed furniture with minimalist lines.
The project reorganizes the existing compartmentalized structure, marked by small divisions and poorly functional circulation, freeing up space through the selective demolition of walls to create a large social area with a direct connection to the kitchen through an oblique opening, redefining paths, spatiality, and the relationship with natural light.
Based on the principles of demolition to create and restoration to reintegrate, the construction project combines noble materials such as solid wood and Estremoz marble, giving coherence and identity to the whole. With 158 m², four bedrooms, and a master suite, the apartment now takes on a new life with light coming in from the two facades, symbolizing a new way of living in Avenidas Novas, capable of reconciling architectural memory with new living.
